Superstitions Have power?

In your settings, do you have superstitions (such as breaking a mirror will bring 7 years of bad luck)? Do they have a real effect (such as say giving a luck roll on all rolls for one day for finding the proper coin)? Or are they just flavor to give your people a sense of realism?

What superstions do you use?

I've only used one so far in my campaign. It was in a goblin society living near the PC's home territory. They believed that if a certain type of albino eel (BIG eel) bit them it would steal their soul. Had the PC's convinced of this as well. They hunted down every eel that attacked them, just to be sure. :)

I think superstitions hold less water whn you KNOW that people can really curse you or that doing certain things will bring doom upon you. Just my opinion.

In one area of my setting whenever there is a full or new moon the commoners (and some others) make a circle with their thumb and index finger it hold it up to one open eye muttering, "Her Eye, the Moon" to ward off possible evil from the Mistress of Death. If something bad happens to someone that is known not to take that superstition seriously, he is said to have stared too long at the moon.

There are others but that's one of my favorites... :)
