So, Boston has some excitement today. On the front page of the Boston Metro (and lots of othe rplaces) this morning was the announcement that U2 was playing at the local Somerville Theatre, in Davis Square, Somerville.
The Somerville Theatre is a wonderful little local place - one big movie screen/stage, and several small ones. It's where locals go for the occasional artsy movie, small concert, and such. The main theater has something like 980 seats. Not the kind of place big-time bands play. But for a band that knows its music, it is a fine intimate place to play.
But, U2 decided to do a promotional, invite-only concert there, and kept it pretty darned secret until it hit the papers. I pass through Davis Square on my way home from work. It was laced liberally with cops and news people and stuff. Though not a one of them will get in, the Square is going to be packed with people, I'm sure.
With only 980 seats, and invite only, there's not a chance in hades of getting a ticket. Though I did run into a lady who had tickets at the supermarket...
...and I turned on the radio on my way back from said market, and they announced that they'll be simulcasting the concert. And that's pretty darned cool. Thanks for livening up the town, U2!
Edit: Bostonians - the simulcast is on Mix 98.5 (WBMX) starting at 9 PM.
