Survival Skill

I recently started using PCGen and I've noticed that it appears to have the Survival skill broken down into some subsets for Lost/Natural Hazards, Natural Environments, The Planes and Underground. If a character has ranks in Survival do they need to be seperated like knowledge skills (as it appears to be handled in PCGen) or do you keep the Survival skill ranks in one lump and apply the different synergy bonuses (from different Knowledge skills) that may or may not apply as needed?

That must be for the different synergy bonuses. It's one skill, but can get quite a few bonuses - +2 for tracking, +2 for above-ground, etc. (So those combine for a +4 to track above-ground, so far as I know.)

Nope... what CC said, It's all about synergy bonuses baby! That and using the skill in different settings with different knowledge sets.

Without installing PC Gen on this computer, I can't really tell you how it works. But, I am guessing that you can add the skills so it shows up on a sheet with the synergy bonuses for different environments. Take a look at the Knowledge skills. 5 ranks of Nature gives you a +2 to above ground survival. 5 ranks of Dungeoneering gives you a +2 to underground survival. 5 ranks of Planes gives you a +2 to extraplanar survival.

I would think you could choose a few of the itemized survival skills so it can compute applicable synergies. But, you shouldn't need to pay for it twice.

So far as I can tell, PCGen wants me to buy the ranks twice. When I try to put ranks in the subsets it tells me I have no ranks left to "purchase skills". It's quite possible I'm missing something since I new to PCGen. I've asked this question on the PCGen Yahoo group but haven't yet received an answer.
