SW Saga - How is space combat?

I'm wondering now that WotC has a miniatures game devoted to it and Wizkids has cardboard minis that might serve just as well. Did they keep the rules from the RCR (I doubt it) or did they do something else?

It is a new system. It is essentially an extension of personal combat with some additional rules to deal with starship actions. In fact, starships are statted much like PCs now and include such things as allowing a PCs increase Ref Def to increase his starship Ref Def. As a result, it is very quick and easy to use.

I also note that all starship operation feats are gone. Everyone can pilot to an extent making it easier for everyone to contribute in starship combat.

Ships-statted-like-PCs has been remarkably successful in the Serenity RPG, too, so it was no shock to see it used in SWSE. :)

Yeah my 5 pages of house rules for RCR, to do the same thing, get thrown out the window. I am a pretty happy camper.

My real hope is that starship construction will follow both the droid and beast creation systems and be very similar to character creation.

That is:

1. Choose Ship Type (affects Abilities) and Size
2. Choose Level and HP
3. Determine Abilities
4. Choose Equipment and Accessories
5. Compute Cost

Ran a brief ship combat last game session (1 PC transport + 1 PC fighter vs. 6 enemy fighters), and it went pretty smoothly. Not having to worry about firing arcs was a big help, and using the same basic rules as character-scale combat made this the first starship combat I've run per RAW in years that wasn't an exercise in aggravation.

I'd say SECR starship combat works pretty darn well.
