SW -- Why the droids don't remember

I would have guessed either bad editing or they programmed themselves to forget their appearances in the movies. I know I want to program myself to forget that I saw the Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones.

I've been assuming all along the robots have had memories erased. It happens on my computer all the time, why not on droids.:)

Tough if R2 had memories erased, it does begthe question how he knew where to go in SW:ANH.

Yeah, I've never had a problem with the Droids not remembering. I assume, that it Ep.3, to protect Luke and Leia, characters were sworn to secrecy, and certain droids had their memories erased.

What explanation I'm really eager to hear from Lucas is:

1> Why doesn't Vader recognize C-3PO in Cloud City?

B.S. Answer: Because C-3PO was on the back of Chewbacca the whole time and Vader would'nt have been able to really see him to recognize him.

Nick-Picky Counter Arguement: But if Vader is such an awesome Sith Lord with all the senses of someone so gifted in the Force, would'nt he have seen or HEARD C-3PO?

Super B.S. Answer: Okay, maybe he did recognize C-3PO, but kept to himself. It would be unseemly for a Sith Lord to suddenly stop talking to Lando and go, " Hey, I used to own that droid! Give it back!" Maybe Vader saw Threepio, made a mental note, then after Solo's carbon freeze, he amended the deal with Lando by saying, "Take the Wookie and the Princess to my ship". He said this knowing that he'd not only get great prisoners, but also Threepio back as well.......if he even cared.

Nick-Picky Counter Arguement: Okay, now you're actually putting more thought into this than Lucas has.

2.> Why doesn't Owen Lars recognize C-3PO when the Jawas are selling him?

B.S. Answer: Hey, Threepio never introduced himself to Owen, to him he was just another Protocol droid. Plus, when Owen knew him he had that burnt up set of coverings, not the golden ones he had in Ep4.

Nick-Picky Counter Arguement: Okay, I guess........thin, but it'll work.

3.>Biggest loop hole has to be why doesn't Obi-Wan recognize R2-D2?

B.S. Answer: Obi-Wan never really hung out with R2 in Ep1. Qui-Gon, Jar-Jar, Padme, and Anakin did. In Ep2, Padme had R2 during the 10 year interim, and during the movie R2 was with Padme and Anakin. So techinically, when Obi-Wan said, "I don't seem to ever remember ever owning a droid," he was telling the truth.

Nick-Picky Counter Arguement: Hmmmmmm........almost, but Obi-Wan IS aware of R2-D2's existence. R2 was monitoring Padme's sleeping chambers in the beginning of Ep2. In Episode 4, he looks at R2 as if he's seeing him for the first time. Or knowing of him.

B.S. Answer: Yeah, but come on.......let's say you have a friend who show's you his pet dog Frankie once. Are you going to recognize Frankie when you see him again 30 years later?

Nick-Picky Counter Arguement: I would if I had a sharp mind like a Jedi Knight.

B.S. Answer: Come on! Jedis are human too.

Maybe things like 'terrain mapping' were untouched when he had his memory erased? After all, its obvious when they went in and erased a lot of stuff, they left the personalities of both Threepio and R2 alone. Maybe data on planets they've been too were left alone.

No, wait.......that doesn't work either. Threepio obviously has lived on Tattoine a long time and in Ep4, he looks upon it as if he's never been there. And also shows no signs of being familiar with its geography or anything else.

I'm gonna assume R2 knew which general direction to head off because he just had sound reasoning. He just looked at the mountians, and thought.......if anyone was going to live around here, they'd probably take shelter in the mountains. Nothing more.

p.s. Posting this was such a pain, thank goodness I saved my post in Microsoft Word before hitting , "Submit Reply". I made the mistake of not doing that last week...........grrrrrrrrrrr.

firstly, re: characters not recognizing the droids again in the original trilogy:

both R2s and 3POs are common types of droids. there are literally millions of them in the galaxy. why would anyone assume that one they are seeing now is the same one they saw 30 years ago?

someone else here made a good analogy (i can't remember who or what thread it was on): if you used to own a certain type of car (color/model/whatever), when you see one on the road, you don't immediately think, "hey, there's my old car!" you just think, "i used to have a car like that."

secondly, re: R2 knowing where to find ben kenobi: i always assumed that Leia knew where to find ben (she was traveling to tatooine to meet him, after all), and programmed R2 with the location.

3.>Biggest loop hole has to be why doesn't Obi-Wan recognize R2-D2?

And who says he doesn't?

When they meet, and Luke explains, Obi-Wan doesn't say, "I've never met this droid before." He says, "I can't seem to remember ever owning a droid." Which is true, he didn't.

Just another of Obi-Wan's classic "point of view" evasions, if you aks me. :D

Heh heh heh, that's also a good point Mouseferatu. I was thinking of mentioning that too. (A friend of mine who's a big Star Wars nut uses that line of logic when the subject is brought up) I withdrew from writing that in my above post because......for some reason, Ben lied so much to Luke as it is, I didn't want to point out yet another lie, I mean......point of view. Obi-Wan should be remembered as a wise mentor, not a lying S.O.B. :D [ yeah, I know we all love him no matter what........just kidding]

bwgwl also mentions another good analogy. I used the analogy with pets, but his car analogy is good too. But the thing about R2D2 is if he's a car, his licence plate is clearly known to Obi-Wan in both Ep2 and Ep4. But again, like I said......its been 30 some odd years. Its very realistic to say he just didn't remember. If and if we went the route of assuming he wasn't lying again.

Radio Drama

Don't know if anyone else has listened to the radio drama but two things re:R2 happened there. Firstly, Leia and Captain Antilles give R2 exact coordinates for Obi-Wan's hut. Secondly, they tell both of them to conceal the identity of the Princess. Interestingly, Captain Antilles says that the droids will stop at nothing to fulfill their goals, including "lying or self-destructing"!

this is my own interpretation, but here goes...

there are millions of R2 units in the galaxy. all of them are designated R2-[some letter][some digit]. there are only (26 x 10) 260 possible names for R2 units. therefore, there's got to be thousands of droids with the "license plate" R2-D2.

does anyone remember R5D4? It was a droid that looked a lot like Artoo, but was red where Artoo is blue. I don't think that R2D2 is just a random license plate number for a droid, but a specific designation for that model as bwgwl said, just like C-3P0.
