Yeah, I really think you are on to something with multi-class archetypes. I suspect we may see something like that in a rules supplement later on. Adding these archetypes to the database is tricky, because the database requires you to choose ONE class. Thus, I would need to manually enter each "version" separately according to its class. Ugh. Ok. I'll change it. If you think full swim speed is too much (equivalent to a Ring of Swimming, an uncommon magic item), then what do you think of the Barbarian or Monk's Unarmored Defense (equivalent to Bracers of Defense, a RARE magic item)? Perhaps I'll reduce the swim speed to 20-ft (for speed 30) or 15-ft (for speed 25), but I'm not wholly convinced there's a need to balance it out that way. I am going for simplicity. But giving a creature a swim speed, that also interact with two other rules: Fighting Underwater (PHB) & Swimming for a Long Time (DMG). In the case of the PHB, having a swim speed means you no longer suffer advantage to melee attacks of any kind. Ok, yes it says "Archetypes" in the title, but in my very first paragraph I make it clear this is being used in a colloquial sense, not a specific rules sense. Furthermore, I specifically call out the Ship Mage as being a suitable replacement for Bardic College, Druid Circle, Sorcerous Origin, Warlock Patron, or Arcane Tradition. Will it require some creativity on the part of the player to make Ship Mage suit their class? Possibly, and I am fine with that. For example, a Sorcerer (Ship Mage) might have the blood of sirens in her veins, giving her intuitive understanding of the seas, and the ability to charm the wind itself with her voice. Another example, a Warlock (Ship Mage) might be sworn to the Flying Dutchman, gaining preternatural insights into navigating the waters of the world, hoping to evade his dark fate. That was only meant for color, to suggest that other Arcane Traditions of the Wizard might look down on a Wizard who takes the Ship Mage archetype instead of an Arcane Tradition. Yeah, that was my design thinking too. Disarm is one of the new action options in the DMG. Nice find! I thought about something similar, because it fits the archetype very well. However, I was concerned that it would overshadow a Barbarian or Monk's Unarmored Defense. Hmm. Maybe not. Unarmored Defense *is* a passive ability after all, and Unarmored Defense does not *define* a Barbarian or Monk in the way that their other features do. I may use it! Thanks!
