But as he goes, something strikes him, setting the mist swirling, something that now slithers into the space he left empty.</p><p></p><p>At last Pendrake sees it, this visitor to Spelding Square. It is black, or a yellow so dark it could be mistaken for black. It is perhaps the size of a man, though much lower to the ground, with flesh – if flesh it is - that is leathery and wet and glossy at the same time, forming an agitated central body of ill-defined changing shape, above which two writhing tentacles twist.</p><p></p><p>From the central mass a crude blocky appendage glistening with tiny acrid droplets thrusts forward, but is easily dodged. The tentacles too slap like clumsy striking snakes.
