[QUOTE="RareBreed, post: 9068534, member: 6945590"] Yes this is very true. I always have a hard time saying I am half Filipino because while technically true, the area that my mother comes from has always had an extremely strong separatist movement to it. The Sulu Archipelago region of the Philippines never truly surrendered to the Spanish and so the Sultanate of Sulu (and the Maguindanao Sultanate) stayed out of the Spanish-American War and the follow up Filipino Insurrection. When the Americans turned around after defeating Aguinaldo's forces and stabbed the Muslim Sultanates in the back, the Americans were finally able to subdue the Muslim regions and forcibly integrated them into the rest of what we now know as "The Philippines". When my maternal grandparents were born, they were not actually Filipinos. Their original "country" no longer exists. But who has heard of the "Sultanate of Sulu" before? That's why I just say I am half Filipino. However, my mother's people are very very different from Filipinos and have much more in common with Malaysians and Indonesians. Their religion, culture, language, music and attitudes are different from the Christianized/Hispanicized Filipinos in the Visayas and Luzon. Most of my relatives have Muslim names like Javil, Hussein, Omar, Abdullah, Qadiri, etc....with Arabic or native surnames, unlike the majority of Filipinos who have Hispanic last names. As I mentioned before, the whole Domino Theory was predicated on neighboring countries being infected by the Communist influence. This can spread because ethnic groups rarely follow a country's borders. For example, my mother's people, the Tausug, are also represented in Sabah of Malaysia. The same is true of the Badjao and Sama tribes, who extend not just to Malaysia and Indonesia, but even parts of Thailand. And sadly, the Filipino version of "The Troubles" isn't isolated to Mindanao, but to neighboring Malaysia too...going back to the point that you have to look at neighboring ethno groups and polities.
