Tales of Earthsea

Has anyone heard much of the Japanese Anime film Tales of Earthsea (Gedo senki in Japanese). It's directed by Goro Miyazaki, the son of Hayao Miyazaki. In Japan last year it was a smash hit.

According to IMDB and Wikipedia, it's set to be released in the UK on DVD in August, I believe, but is having rights issues in the US because the Sci-Fi channel owns the Earthsea property there for now. It's being released in Russia in two weeks, so I"m planning to see it here.

I've heard that it won the Japanese version of the Ratzzies (am I spelling that right?), you know, the awards they give to the worst movies. Also, I've heard that Hayao himself has expressed disappointment in the finished product.

That being said, I really do want to see it.

It is no real surprise that Hayao expressed disappointment... It was his son, the younger Miyazaki, who directed it and he did so against Hayao Miyazaki's wishes. I havn't heard anything about the "worst movie" award though...

I find that hard to believe. The movie was a big box office hit and if I remember correctly got pretty good reviews from the Japanese press.

I had heard that LeGuin was delighted with the idea that Miyazaki would do an Earthsea film, and encouraged him to flesh out some of the many 'untold stories' - but was then very (bitterly?) disappointed to hear that it had gone to the son to direct, rather than Hayao himself.

It will be interesting to look out for it here in the UK, certainly.

Believe what you want, but that's what
this says. I'm not saying I believe everything I read (especially online), but still. Just because something does well commercially doesn't mean it warrents artistic merit.

Le Guin herself expressed disappointment in it. You can find her review Here. Be forewarned, it's a long one!

Despite all this, I still want to see this movie.
