Taught some new players...

Imagine my surprise when the neighborhood kids knocked on the door this evening, and asked to learn D&D.

So we made up a party, fighter, rogue, wizard, cleric, and worked thru some rules. They fought some goblins and died against the carrion crawler.

Kinda cool.

Sounds like it was good -- and I'm not knocking it... just sounds way too creepy the way you wrote it...

So they just had this sudden urge and then they just collectively grouped together and came to you? Oh, so instead of pink flamingos on the lawn, you have a big neon sign that says "Dungeons and Dragons here" (of course, that sign could be interpreted a different way ;) )

--again, just teasing -- it sounds so odd the way its written. But, as already said in this thread -- sounds cool. I hope they had as much enjoyment as you did :)

The kids are 15, and they knew my son plays. Not exactly sure why they wanted to play...

They wanted to keep the character sheets, so perhaps they'll play again. Unfortunately, I have no room for them in my teenager game. There's already nine 15 year old boys in the group, and my wife says I'm over the limit!

I also can't really run another game right now, so hopefully they'll find someone to run.

When I was in 6th grade... a phenomenon happened....

I was momentarily "friends" with a very popular kid, and I introduced him to some D&D. We even got in trouble for playing during class... we'd roll dice secretly inside our desks.

A few weeks later... D&D was "popular". All the popular kids were sitting around tables during free-time at school... playing D&D.

The irony was that I wasn't included.

LONG LIVE NERDS!

Now for the important question, did they enjoy it enough to want to return and play again?

So it must have been alright, they came back tonight.

Turns out there are a lot of kids in school talking about D&D, so they decided to try it.

Last time was kind of a D&D tutorial. I had mentioned that if you play an ongoing game there are story elements, and characters have personalities, but I didn't get into any of that. This time we called the PCs by name, and one of the kids started to play a style. I wouldn't go so far as to say Aven (the character) had personality, but he did have attitude.

I sent them into a haunted house, and gave them a bunch of the mainstays of D&D. Giant rats, giant spider, skeletons, zombies, and an animated broom. Naturally all the monsters were chosen because I had minis for them. :)

They've found some treasure, got some good use of skills, sneak attacked, got some crits, used some spells, and found out undead can't be sneaked or critted. From the map they've figured out there should be a secret door somewhere.

Not to shabby!

Sounds like it was going well. Glad to hear you all were enjoying yourselves. Even if it is not a life-long habit for them, you all seem to have had fun for the two nights! :D
