The messenger thrusts the card into the young man’s hands, and hurries away without another word. “What … wait!” the young man calls, but the messenger is already out the door. “Tonight? What am I … ?” He stops himself and closes his eyes. “Serroth, victor and conqueror, my eyes are yours; my hands are yours; my blood is yours. Guide my strike,” he prays softly. When he opens his eyes, his gaze is clear and filled with purpose. He scans the crowd, nods once to himself, and makes his way directly to Cythera. “Miss, I’ve a proposition for you. I need..” He trails off suddenly, aware that he’s misspoke, and his clarity visibly evaporates. “That is to say … a proposal. But not permanent, I mean. Uh, I want to hire you for the evening.” His face turns scarlet. “What are the rates for your services …” With some effort, he stops himself and rallies. “Let me start again. I need an escort, in the military sense of the word. I need one who has a good sword arm, which I think you do, and who might survive in polite society for at least a few hours, which I think you can. Obviously, you’d be compensated for your time.
