Ok. I'm sold on the idea of starting with character creation. It is obviously an important aspect of the game, and fundamental in teaching some of the principles. My goal is to teach these old-timers, rather than just entertain them, so it's crucial that they understand how to make their own characters. Given that character creation is going to be step 1, I want to find ways to get the necessary info into each player's hands, while at the same time limiting how much info they get in order to keep it from being overwhelming or becoming a distraction. I am considering cut'n'pasting the info from the SRD which is applicable, but not including anything that isn't necessary. Using handouts from the SRD would also save me having to find extra copies of the PHB. Here are other ideas I'm considering: 1) Allow fewer races. For example, maybe Human, Elf, Dwarf & Halfling. 2) Allow fewer classes. For example, maybe just Fighter, Cleric, Rogue & Wizard. The class info would also be pruned, taking out higher level progressions and higher level abilities. 3) Shorten the feat list by removing all the item creation, meta-magic and any that only higher level characters could obtain. 4) Shorten the spell lists. Spell lists for just 0 and 1st level spells would be needed, and some of the less useful ones could be dropped. 5) LImit the equipment available. Perhaps limit the list to just light & medium armor, shields, all simple weapons, a few martial ones, maybe just bastard sword & dwarven axe for exotic ones, and then some other misc items. Does that sound like a workable idea? Comments? I'd be happy to hear other suggestions for keeping the character creation step in check, yet still instructive.
