OK, so he's playing an elven druid. Key idea is to set up a first adventure that plays to his strengths. Remember, he's inexperienced, so give him plenty of opportunities to think and plan his next move. One possibility is to throw him into a woodland clean-up crew type of operation. Say a powerful wizard and a powerful priest summoned creatures to battle each other in order to settle a difference between them in the woods. The battles are over, and now the druid must eliminate the unnatural creatures still hanging around after the fight. Good creatures to throw at a 1st-level elven druid are: 1. Small Fire elemental (CR1) - Endure elements (fire) will completely eliminate all fire damage it is capable of inflicting, and lasts 24 hours. 2. Medium-size Zombie (CR 1/2) - A zombie is slow (partial actions only), so the druid can adopt the strategy of staying out of reach and launching missile attacks against it. 3. Abyssal Dire Rat (CR 1/2) - This is a straight fight, but one which a druid can probably win, especially if he has good animal companion. You can also play to the druid's specialties by giving him a number of animal encounters. For example, he could meet an ornery bear, a nest of vipers and a pack of wolves so that he can use Animal Empathy, calm animals and invisibility to animals. You could also do the classic "wounded animal that needs help" scenario. Roleplaying encounters could include a ranger that could help the druid locate one of the creatures he needs to clean up, a dryad who tries to entice him from his job and a child from a nearby human settlement who is lost in the woods. Have fun!
