Technologist Class (The Fantastic Science)

Thanks to a road trip, it looks like my gaming group is going to be getting back together for a little while. Right now the plan is just to have a simple one-off, but I'm using the opening of Red Hand of Doom since it means very little prep work for me and because it leaves the option of continuing on over Skype or OpenRPG if the guys are available and interested during the summer.

One of the players -- our former DM, in fact -- picked up EN Publishing's The Fantastic Science a while ago and would like to give the Technologist class from it a shot. Given that this is the first time we've played in literally months, I've got no interest in telling him to pick something else. But at the same time, I want to know what to expect, so any experiences you can share regarding the class would be great. Is it gimped beyond all reason? Insanely powerful? Totally supplants [class x] at its usual role?

In terms of particulars... PCs will be 5th level, and he'll likely be teamed up with a Knight and a Rogue. If we end up playing through the whole campaign in the coming months, it'll progress up to 10th level. In order to shore up the lack of a party member, I've also been toying with the idea of letting them go Gestalt.

Thanks much.
