Sorry, but I still subscribe to the concept of the caster being the fulcrum, for lifting anything up with "telekinesis", the anchoring point for the effectiveness of the spell's leverage. And being the point the telekinetic force is emmanating from and resting on he cannot affect himself. Also If he could lift himself (accidentally or on purpose) by trying to affect an object too heavy for the limitations of this spell, that would IMHO be specificially noted in the description of this spell. Instead - if the object is too heavy, nothing happens, the spell's "leverage" is not strong enough. One would think they would mention mages flying around the room because they misjudged and tried to lift the granite idol, wouldn't they ? Of course, if you assume the telekinetic force exerted to be an effect independent from the mage, simply raised and controlled by him, things may work out different, but that theory is not supported by the spell's description, or its school, transmutation. And yes, if he was flying or levitating, the (non-telekinesis) spell or other means used to support him into that position would provide the point of leverage, IMHO, be it wings, a gasbag, dragon or a spell's effect. YMMV BTW if you use the spell "Telekinesis " for performing combat manouevres, you get to use your caster level in place of your normal base attack value. In the case of the ring, that would increase the BA-value for this purpose from +4 to +9 (or from +6 to +12, depending on your take what the minimum caster level for creating said ring could bem according to the rules ). Which may ease the misgivings initially displayed about the ring's effectivness.
