Eberron definitely won't appeal to everyone; it's more Rennaisance than Middle Ages, it features very widespread (low-level) magic, and some people just can't stand to see nomadic halflings or not-necessarily-evil orcs. Some people will find the level of detail overwhelming. Others will just feel that it's not old-school enough for them. But I expect those people to be th exception. In fact, I think Eberron has a very old-school sense of fun. The designers have created a setting where being an "adventurer" has a real place in the world, and I can't remember the last time I've been so excited to explore some ancient ruins. I expect a lot of people who are on the fence to eventually give Eberron a try and end up having a blast. The book is absolutely chock-full, jam-packed with details. The backstory and region descriptions are filled with adventure hooks (both explicit and woven into the text itself). The sample characters were a great way to demonstrate the tone of the setting. There's so much there, but there's also a sense that this is only the tip of the iceberg. I really didn't get Eberron the first time I read about it, because it's simply not the kind of setting that a few marketing buzzwords can easily capture. But the more I learned, the more excited I was for it. The final straw was reading Keith Baker's posts as Hellcow on these forums and at the WotC boards. As most of you know, Keith created Eberron and was a big part of the design team. Between his enthusiasm for the setting, the level of detail he had in his head about it, and the commitment he showed to it, I had no doubt that it would rock. And it does. I'm still in the process of reading the book (it's huge!), but so far I have been uniformly impressed. This book met my very high expectations. If you haven't picked it up yet, check it out when it hits FLGSs tomorrow!
