Templates: Must roles match?

I want to add the Shadowborn Stalker to an Ettercap Fang Guard. However, the Fang Guard is a soldier, and the Shadowborn Stalker is a template for a Lurker.

Can these two mix?

One concern I have is that the templated monster now has AC 22, Ref 18. I worry if my 2nd level players can hit that.

On DMG Page 181, the Sidebar Monsters, Powers, and Attack Bonuses says to "Use the role provided by the class template, not the monster’s original role, when making this comparison."
From this I can gather that it is assumed that you can use the templates on monsters of a different role.

We had a fight with a solo monster AC22, our party being lvl4. That's equal to a +1 to hit (and DEFs etc.). It was tough but we managed to beat it down.
Reduce the AC to 21 and it should be fine.
