Message: <blockquote data-quote="Skade" data-source="post: 646579" data-attributes="member: 3320">I'd like to suggest a great series of books by Jacqueline Carey.  They are Kushiel's Dart, Kushiel's Chosen, and Kushiel's Avatar.  I am only half way through the first, but I love it so far.  Here is the gist.  The religion of Terre d'Ange is in large part centered on the Chosen of Naamah, who was the mortal over of an angel, and the progenitor of their people.  These Chosen come from Houses bred into the service of an aspect of Naamah, or rather an aspect of the passions she lived by.  Each House has its own traditions and varying degrees of religious fervor, but all are the same in that the worship of Naamah is done through prostitution.  These Houses are nearly considered noble due to their place in mythology, as well as the wealth that they posess.  Many of the Chosen are essentially bought by their House, or when born into it, still must "pay" for the training which they recieve.  All manners of love, sex, and courtly skills have been instilled into these children from birth.  When they pereform a service, which varies quite a bit from House to House they are paid a certain sum, which is given to their House, or Patron.  If the customer shoses to however, he may gift them with a sum towards thier Marque, a personalized symbol tattooed upon their back that i a sign of their devotion to Namaah.  When it is complete they are free to do as they chose.The book is quite tasteful, though some of the subject matter could be discomforting to some.  The author never goes for the cheap thrill though.</blockquote>
