The Elements of Magic.. a great system as it is, but sometimes my mind pulls some weird tricks on me. I was watching TV last night and this unrelated thought popped into my mind... what if? Warning.. this is all basically a straight brain dump of a half-formed idea... but I am looking for input on whether this would be a practical/feasible option for the system. ==== Turn spell lists into discrete skills, with Spellcraft counting as the list for general enhancements. The skills are cross-class skills for all non-spell casting classes. You gain a +2 synergy bonus to all spell list skills for each 5 ranks in Knowledge (Arcana) [Knowlege(Religeon) for those clerical types] A feat 'Mythic Blood' grants the character 1 Caster level, and the appropriate number of mana points and signature spells. This feat can be taken multiple times. A feat 'Spell List Expertise' grants a character +2 synergy bonus to a chosen spell list, and that spell list is considered a class skill. This feat can be taken multiple times but you must chose a different spell list each time. Spell mana caps are changed to: Max MP in a spell = caster level + CHR modifier Max MP for a particular spell list = ranks in that list + synergy bonus Boost the skill points for spell-casting classes, off the top of my head I would say 10 or 12. Advantages: Any character can add a dash of spell ability without multi-classing. Spell casters can reflect the literary archetype of the educated person, ala Merlin. No sudden jump in ability, one day Fred does know how to summon creatures, the next he can summon a young dragon. True specialization Disadvantages: 1st level mages can potentially fire off the equivilent of a 2nd level spell with a CHR of 18... balance of the Core classes altered, Rogue/Mage increases inpower. creating NPC mages gets incrementally more difficult. Thoughts anyone?
