The common room is warm and inviting. A merry fire burns at the stone hearth, and the room is filled with light. The men (and the few women) seem friendly, wealthier and softer than the clientele of the wharf-side dives. On the small raised stage, a musician bends over a stringed instrument, plucking a contemplative melody with long, slender fingers. "Oh, my!." The innkeeper's hand covers her mouth, holding in her gasp. Her brow furrows up, and her eyes well up with tears.
