MutieMoe over at RPGnet posted a request for help with the following... I responded with an idea, but then I ended up making a quick and simple map, so I thought I would post it here for the heck of it... following is my idea to him as well as the map... --- What if the King of Thieves acquired the guild house from a former mass murderer. The two had dealings with each other... maybe the person was an assassin for some time (for the KoT), but went from doing it (killing) professionally to doing it for fun... he even started to collect people and place them in his ever expanding basement. This basement became a maze of rooms and hallways... think Winchester Mystery House, but underground. He would hunt them... slowly... methodically following them as they moved from room to room in the dark before finally killing them. Eventually, even this no longer appeased his appetite for killing, and so he brought in multiple victims, even an occasional monster. He would creep through this darkened maze and watch as his victims gave in to their own fears, fighting everything they came across... even friends would turn on each other down there - all to his great delight. But, he became so enthralled with his playground that he began to lose sight of who he used to be. This once wealthy (if not evil) man of great social status (with a very secretive job) was now a rambling mad man, and in his weakness the KoT stepped in and rid the world of the monster, taking its lavish home as his own. However, what happened in the basement could not so easily be contained. Over time, the shells of those victims began to rise again and the KoT had all but a few entrances sealed shut, with the others protected with great doors which were then magically protected. In fact, he employed a man with such powers to protect much of the home in various ways... but of course, eventually there was no longer a need for him and so he too, like so many in the past, was dropped into the basement. Many years have passed since that day, but the KoT continues to have nightmares about what could still lie beneath those floors. The basement has been opened since then as many unfortunate people have found themselves dropped into it by him, but what happens to them afterwords can only be imagined in his nightmares. Now, he finds himself in need of people willing to help retrieve an artifact from a wizard, and he has just the test for any would-be adventurers willing to help... investigate what is happening in the basement... but the threats are many... ...there are the walking corpses of many victims of the past ...a wizard who helped magically protect the basement now reduced to a mumbling lunatic worshiping his Shard of the Sun gemstone, perhaps the only source of light down there. His magical traps protect the various rooms he now calls home ...and somewhere, a ghoul who once lived above the basement. A ghoul who, unlike others of his kind, possesses a speed unmatched by most, and a lethality that is only enhanced by the wretched dark of the basement and an insatiable desire to not simply kill every living thing it sees, but to bask in the horror of their prolonged deaths... a ghoul who was once an important man from the world of the living with a dark secret... a ghoul who will one day have his revenge and kill the one who took it from him, the King of Thieves. --- Got a little bored at work so I thought I would throw a map together real quick based on the write-up I posted above... The map... Higher res version... http://www.lastlands.com/upload/thebasement.jpg --- Anyway, maybe someone could use at least the map, who knows ;)
