I am working on the same process, though I am doing it quite different. I am making a core class variant based off of the Cassiline brotherhood. My reasoning is that it is awefully hard to reconcile a Prestige Class, with the theme of the training starting at the age of 10. I have only started, thats it. But here are a few of the concepts floating around in my head. First and foremost are the concepts that the character (who is first level) has already taken a "background" in the Cassiline brotherhood. meaning that they have specifically requested to have been a trained character from the age of 10. Therefore a 1st level Cassiline is more or less a trained Cassiline Brother (about the same power as Joscelin is in the first book). These are all short hand abilities of the class, I appologize for not detailing anything for you but if a concept grabs you use it. Defensive form: When protecting a charge, the Cassiline can fight defensively without taking penalties for doing so. At 5th level this ability grants an additional +2 bonus on AC checks. Perfect Companion: at 1st level, a cassiline is able to take from his own AC to add to the Armor Class of his Charge. this is a step ability which continues to grow until 20th level Terminus: The cassiline is taught to perform the final act of devotion to his charge. If things go from bad to worse, a cassiline is able to perform a lightening quick attack which simultaneously kills himself and his charge to prevent them from being taken. A Will Save DC 20 roll is required to end the process or refocus its fury. Weapons of the Order: A cassiline gains the Weapon focus feat for the following weapons; Daggers, and Broadsword. Weapons and Armor: All simple and martial weapons (see Weapons of the Order for more details), and with light armor, and vambraces. A cassiline is able to use his vambraces to shield himself or deflect blows in the same way as others use a Buckler of Small Shield. I poured over the books in order to gain the knowledge necessary to know the true equipment of a cassiline. In Kushiel's Dart, when Phedre is leaving d'Essoms rooms in the palace, with Joscelin in the lead, Jacqueline carey writes that he was easy to make out because of his Broadsword on his back. His daggers are as balanced for throwing as for close in work. both Imriel, and Joscelin use the vambraces for deflecting blows, and like a shield. I do believe that Joscelin only truely used armor once in the books (though I couldn't find the source), This was during his attack on the Prison in Caerditas Unitas when he was attempting to rescue Phedre from Melisandres clutches. I am currently hard at work on a D20 Setting tentatively called Kushiel's Destiny. Anyone who wishes to contribute to such a cause may email me at sid7e_nb at myway.com
