The rats look to each other, seemingly confused. A silent conversation is going on between them, you are sure of it. You note the larger, beruned rats simply wander about, not seeming to be a part of the larger conversation. Then, finally, the rats turn again towards you. "We hear your thoughts. Your minds are as Daylit. We see malice. We hear your fear. You need not fear. We are the Chosen." "Our watchmen are not able to reason as we are. They cannot speak. Their minds are broken and childish." A hissing, rough sound is audible in the chamber. After a moment, you think it might be laughter. "We share our tunnels with the humans who built them. We share our tunnels with Father and Mother and the other Chosen folk. We share our tunnels with those who Walk Like Men, but who are like us. We see much. We see all, for you believe us to be foolish and but animals. Many of us are. Many of us were. But now we are like you." One rat moves forward almost close enough to get to Saxon's feet, but Mzarem stops it with a growl. Another moves slowly towards Vargo. "These two run with the Father, though they may not know it, and they smell different. Father made us as we are, and made the watchmen. We speak to you now because Father would have us be like him, and you are like him." The rats pause for a moment, seeming to consider, then continue. "They were like humans, but when they moved, their skin became as the wall. They took the human from the place where you came down from the Daylit. They dragged him to the place where the fish rides the waters. The fish came, and the fisherman. It is the last we Chosen saw of the man you speak of." "The humans who are not come to our home often. They eat of our flesh and long for bodies to call their own. They are strong, and their smell is everywhere. They think themselves to be undying. They think themselves to be all powerful. But Father knew, for Father is like them in many ways." "They are strong. Not as strong as the Chosen in some ways, but far stronger in others. They are everywhere. We Chosen oppose them for our own reasons. We would aid you if you sought to bring harm to them in any way. We know old ways. Ways the men who built the World have forgotten. Ways to go past the waters to where Those Who Are Not dwell." "Speak if you will. You have no true thought. It is hard for us to tell what to listen to. Your minds are cluttered, chaotic. Your mouth-voice shall have to suffice, and we will be able to answer you in better truth." The rats cluster about your feet, just outside of weapon range. They do not seem nervous or suspicious. Just...waiting. Waiting for you to make some sense of their meandering ramble, perhaps.
