Perhaps your french ear picks other connotations to the word citizen than I do. However citizen implies a legal inhabitant with certain rights and responsibilities. Something the word commoner does not to the same extent. I imagine that the word I'm going for is the french "citadin" as opposed to "paysans". (Forgive me if my french is not up to the highest standards.)I should add that I think of the citizens of Starship Troopers when I hear it. In Starship Troopers only citizens are allowed to vote for example. Also the expression senior citizen implies a certain amount of respect tied to the word.</blockquote>
