The Phobia List

It is a list of phobias and I was curious to see if FEAR OF DICE was in there, as that would be a really bad one for D&D players. It wasn't

Some of the ones that might apply to someone in relation to D&D

Arithmophobia - Fear of Numbers
Numerophobia- Fear of numbers.
Bibliophobia - Fear of Books
Cathisophobia - Fear of sitting
Decidophobia- Fear of making decisions.
Demonophobia or Daemonophobia- Fear of demons.
Catagelophobia - Fear of being riddiculed
(ok, D&D isnt something we should be riddiculed for but its not like it gets us into the coolest showbiz parties or anything ;)
Hierophobia- Fear of priests or sacred things.
(no Divine classes for you then!)
Octophobia - Fear of the figure 8.
(they would have to roll a D4 or D6 for everything!!)
Rhabdophobia- Fear of being severely punished or beaten by a rod, or of being severely criticized. Also fear of magic.(wand)

Now, there are some on that list that are pretty far out there... Some really silly or crazy ones.

Atomosophobia - Fear of Atomic Explosions
(OK, this one shouldnt really be considered a Phobia since having a fear about Atomic Explosions is quite rational, if it were fear of impending Atomic Explosions then that might be a different thing... coz they happen every other day, right?)

Barophobia - Fear of Gravity
(what?? how is that even possible?)

Panophobia or Pantophobia- Fear of everything.
(that was a lazy day at the psychiatrists office.. so Jeff, what are you afraid of? Everything... really, OK well we are done for the day, cya)

Plutophobia- Fear of wealth.
(Yup, thats me... afraid of having money to spend, yah right!)

And the best one (spoiler for some as it could appear a bit rude)
[sblock]
Ithyphallophobia- Fear of seeing, thinking about or having an erect penis.

[/sblock]

Re: fear of atomic explosions.

You have to understand what a phobia is- it isn't just a fear of something, it's an irrational fear of something. That what you fear may be truly fear inducing my seem, at face value, rational, but if you take extreme measures to deal with your fears, if that fear rules your life (or some aspect of it), then you start entering the neurosis/phobia realm.

For instance, it is rational to fear heights. My phobia of heights, however, caused me to nearly kill someone AND have a 5 minute blackout in the process.

Someone who is phobic about atomic explosions may well believe that nuclear war is 30 minutes away, all day, every day, and may move away from a city that would be a likely target; refuse to take job offers in such cities, or may invest their life's savings building a state of the art bomb shelter under the double-wide they live in in the backwoods of Arkansas.

Me and a friend argued this at length.
Since phobia is irrational fear, certain things cant be deemed as irrational, such as fear of sharks... however the idiots that come up with that "ruling" don't appreciate that the irrationality comes from the fact that someone who is afraid of sharks by seeing them on the TV has a phobia, not a fear because their phobia will cause them to become "irrationaly" afraid of them even though they can't hurt them.

A phobia to me is someone who starts screaming and scratching the skin off their arms whenever they think or see their phobia. Some people don't get that and joke that they are scared of certain things but when you see someone with a "real" phobia, you see.

The interesting thing is that scientifically, phobias come from the learned part of our brain, not the instinctive part so anything we become fearful of isnt genetic or in our DNA, we learned to be scared of it somehow.

Thankfuly this does mean that although it seems impossible, phobias can be unlearned... many people disagree with this but I myself have conquered phobias so it can be done.

Someone who won't immerse themselves in water- a landlocked lake, a swimming pool, a tub- for fear if being attacked by sharks is probably justifiably labeled as having a phobia.

There's also Hemophobia, the fear of blood. I've got that one.

It certainly doesn't make it easy on anyone who DMs for me that pictures or even vivid descriptions of blood can make me pass out.
