This branch has been trying to collect the artifacts the PCs have been sent for, and taking over drudic shrines as places of power.  As long as they are held in check, the converters will grow stronger.     I hold out the possiblity that the PCs could actually work for them, and get them what they need to go home.  In this case their orginal mentor would become the BBEG because what they need is a set of artifacts that he is collecting.  He started out an unassuming sage of a backwater lord, he wasnt trusted by the lord or church.  The Lord was recently killed by the committee, along with his heir.  The Sage defended him, winning the respect of the church, and is now next in line to rule the Duchy.  This is when the PCs left his service, suspecting him of foul play.</blockquote>
