Remember the infamous Kickstarter for "The Doom that came to Atlantic city"? A successful run with over 120k USD pledged, yet the game was never made by the original designer and artists were never paid. Instead, apparently the funds were used for things like setting up a new company, moving to a new apartment in Portland, and other endeavors only remotely or even not at all connected to the game. In the end, the creator admitted that the funds had run out and he would try to reimburse everyone. The Kickstarter's comment section, the communication hub for angry and disappointed backers, was awash with theories; About how only the big pledges were getting their money back while the ones in the normal 50-dollars-range were left out because they had little motivation to pursue legal means to get the relatively small amount of money back. Anyway, in the end, at least all backers got their game delivered when another company, Cryptozoic Entertainment, stepped in and finished creating the game. However, the various rewards like pewter miniatures originally part of the kickstarter, but not of the base game itself, still haven't been made. Long story short, the whole thing was a dark stain on boardgame crowdfunding, and it is interesting to know that for the first time, the Federal Trading Comission has looked into a boardgame kickstarter and reached a conclusion.
