Reliance on mechanics that stifled the point of the game: pretending to be elves. I.e., the game philosophy changed from "whatever isn't prohibited can be attempted" to "if it's not expressively on your character sheet as a rule, you can't do it." IMO, that handcuffing of creativity was one of the worst things to happen to the hobby. And I certainly don't consider 4e to be an evolving of D&D. Personal opinion, sure.
