By purchasing the DVD's I know I'll watch repeatedly, then if a better version comes along take the first down to Wherehouse and trade it in to get $7 off the new version. I really don't see what the problem is. If you're going to rent a film, it costs $3. That means all I have to do is watch a purchased DVD four times (six times if a new version never comes out) to justify the purchase financially (since 90% of all DVD's debut at $19.99). Especially since all I have to do is grab it off my shelf instead of going out and driving to Blockbuster. Watch a DVD four times, trade it in to get a better one for $13 in six months or a year. And some movies I love so much I don't trade them in, I'll just own multiple copies (though as I look at my collection only LOTR qualifies.) Then I've had the joy of enjoying these fantastic films *much* more than you for years now. I'm glad that you're happy that you didn't cough up the whopping $20 a year, but for me the value of having these films to enjoy at my leisure is off the charts. But even stepping down from LOTR, I've enjoyed the Underworld DVD, watched it two or three times, and will probably trade it in for the new director's edition coming out in a couple of months. Maybe I'll rent the new version first to make sure, but I don't know, I guess I don't see the big deal. You want something, and if its worth it you buy it. If not you don't. I don't see where the "fight" is. You're happy not watching LOTR, and I'm happy watching them. We both win. :)
