The effects of Magic

As an ongoing discussion within our group the effects of magic, or lack of it, on play are being looked into. For instance, a number of the longer players don't like the proposed change to Disintegrate for 3.5.

What effects does magic have within D&D?

I feel the game (3E) is designed with magic having a high impact on the game. For games where magic is reduced what other changes are in place to cater for this less flashy spell flinging. Also, as the rules are written, what effect does magic have within the game. For example, during last nights game the cleric cast Harm on a particularly hard monster that the party was struggling to defeat by conventional means. The creature failed its save (I've given a save to Harm by the way) and lost all but 1d4 hit points. Another character then hit the creature and killed it. On another occasion the party was fighting a Death Knight and was again struggling by conventional methods when the party wizard cast Disintegrate and poof no more Death Knight. If magic was removed then these opponents would have been a much harder challenge.

I guess what I'm interested in is different view points as to the levels of magic within the game to see what others have learnt.
