Get yourself a fret leveling file and just knock the ends down until they are flush with the wood. You can then take down any sharp corners with a fret dressing file. And then you will likely need to buff out any marks this process leaves on the finish.

That was pretty much what I was thinking but the files alone will cost me at least $60. In the 38 years of playing guitar that's the only time I've seen this, so I don't think it's worth the money for the tools, not to mention the time and taping.
 

I’m a potential disaster every time I grab tools, so I almost always defer to pros when a repair involves something expensive.

(I also don’t have a good space in which to work with tools.)
