My top 10 rules for the road are... #1) Assume everyone else is an idiot...Drive Defensively! #2) Know where you're going. For heaven sakes, don't try to unfold/read/refold that map at highway speeds in bumper-to-bumper traffic. #3) Believe the signs when it says the next rest stop is 75 miles away. Either hold it, or find an empty bottle. #4) Know your fuel range. Don't push the limits to see how far you can go once that little empty light goes on. Being forced to walk 20 miles for gas only proves stupity. #5) Don't attempt to drive in water more than 2' deep. Just cause there's a road underneath doesn't mean the flood will care. #6) If its icy, drive slower and keep your distance from the vehicle ahead. No sense being the 1st idiot to rear end someone in winter. Heck, people may even accuse you of driving like an out-of-state fool. #7) Avoid metal debris. You can drive over most plastic, paper, rubber or even wooden objects without harming your tires or undercarriage, but metal just ain't forgiving. #8) If you see one deer, expect more. Slow down, and keep alert. No sense adding a hood ornament or a hole thru your windshield by becoming a target for its kin. #9) When a vehicle blasts past you doing 40 mph over the limit, just smirk. When you pass them a few miles up the road pulled over by the highway patrol, you can start your laughing. #10) Avoid minivans and motorhomes like the plague. These are the true scourge of the road. People driving them tend to function as if they've had temporary or permanent lobotomies. Pass with utmost care or even find an alternate route to avoid them if possible!
