Lothbound Goblins and Goblin Sharpshooters make for some good generic smalls. After that I bought a couple of the boxed sets, which got me a good spread of figures for characters. I built on that, buying the odd large figure as I needed them.It's a big change from the 1e days when a single lead would cost $3.00-$4.00, then have to be painted. Generally we only had figures for player characters, because of that, with cardboard cut-outs and six-sided dice standing in for creatures. I would rather not go back to that.</blockquote>
