We are spread out across the world, and I at least have the strange affiction that whenever I go on vacation, I visit the local gamestore.

So what are your local stores and why are they worth the visit?

Moenen en Mariken, Nijmegen - the Netherlands - very good selection of all kind of games.
Spelkwartier, Arnhem - the Netherlands - decent selection, lotsa bordgames

This is a question that deserves attention from far more that whomever simply responds....

Don't you think there should be a searchable database of Game Stores? People could provide the info: checking off things like game space, and types of games, names of the owner, etc. etc.

I'd love to see someting like that...

Anyway, here are 3:

in CT:

Visit the Citadel games on Rt. 12 in Groton. Very large selection of RPG, and other gaming materials, typically a high level of stock of out of print, and older games. Few discounts, but no markups either.

in NH:
Portsmouth: Jumpgate off of Rt 1. More of a SciFi store, but they have a reasonable game collection. mostly new stuff

Somersworth off Rt 9: The Paperback Bazaar: Large selection of new and old, much of the old stuff has been placed in the discount bin. They run games constantly, though they don't have a ton of space! They sell DDM Singles as well.

There are two gaming stores in Fort Wayne, Indiana that I feel are worth visiting. The first is Books, Comics & Things. They have two stores in the city and offer a lot of gaming stuff (including open gaming at their Time Corners location). Besides I run games there every Saturday, so it has to be a good place, right? ;) Don't believe me? Ask Buttercup...

My other recommendation is More Than Games. This store sells no RPGs at all but has the best selection of board games and other gaming stuff I've seen. Add that to the fact that the staff is both knowledgable and friendly and you've got a winner.

short answer:

The most notable games stores in the Boston area are:
Pandemonium Books & Games - Garage Mall, Harvard Square, Cambridge
Compleat Strategist - Mass Ave (across from Christian Science Center), Boston
Your Move Games - Davis Sq., Somerville
Danger Planet - 36 Spruce St (off Moody St), Waltham
Hobby Bunker - 33 Exchange St, Malden

long answer:
I have several old threads about this very topic saved on my hard drive, listing (& discussing the relative merits of) stores all over the U.S., Canada, & Europe. Private message me with your email addess if you want 'em.

In Minnesota, it all comes down to The Source Comics and Games in Falcon Heights (*cough* Saint Paul *cough*)

Huge selection of stuff both RPG and board game related. Tons of anime (not my thing, but it's there) tons of miniatures, and comic books. They have a huge section reserved as just gaming space with nice big tables. The Source is one of the biggest gaming stores I've ever seen (for those of you familiar with Games Plus in Illinois, it's significantly bigger than that). Though they offer no discount (which is a shame, I'd buy more there if they did) they don't mark-up, and they don't shrink-wrap.

They also have quite a few customer appreciation events, and the employees are knowledgable.

A cool topic and one that defnitely deserves some attention.

I'll second DaveLozzi's suggestion of Danger Planet and Pandemonium.

At DP, it's the atmosphere that sells the place, at least for me. (That, and being friends with the owner. ;) ) They have a wide selection of RPG's, CCG's, mini-games, and board-games. The staff is friendly and encourages special orders (which is helpful to me, as alot of the stuff I tend to enjoy is more obscure, non-mainsteam stuff.) It's convenient to my house, and it's a great place to meet local gamers: I met my current D+D group there.

At Pandemonium, it's hands-down the knowldge and enthusiasm that the staff brings. If I ask for a good SF or fantasy (or even RPG) recommendation, I know that I can trust their judgement (Of course, there was the "Wheel of Time" debacle, but they recommended it when it was still good. :heh: )

The primary one in Albuquerque is Active Imagination.

It's a nice place, and stocks the usual d20 and collectable card game stuff. It also has a surprising amount of random stuff from other systems, lots of obscure board games, and a huge bumper sticker collection. For some reason, one entire wall is stocked with tons of Warhammer 20k minis - a lot of space to devote to a low-selling game.

The back of the store is devoted to gaming tables - and I use "back of the store" liberally since this is probably more than 50% of the floor space - perhaps 12 tables. It's usually crowded with the high-school geek crowd. They hold local MtG tournements there, too.

It's not exactly a FLGS for me, but they do have a local store: Dragonworld (www.dragonworld.de) in Hamburg, Germany. Best prices around, free (and fast) shipping, nice people (though I only speak from email experience), great selection of products.

Recently, I also found another store in the more immediate area, which seems good enough: Zock! in Saarbrücken, Germany. Don't know too much about their selection of stuff (I was there for Aberrations Boosters), but they do seem to have some sort of game or tourney running whenever I'm there, and the people there are nice enough, too.
