Aeolius
Adventurer
I have seen the D&D chat evolve from its beginning as an AOL forum, to it’s clumsy first step on the web with the GlobalChat (now Digi-Net, formerly iChat) forums and chat, to it’s current incarnation as java interface to a locked IRC server.
The easiest solution for evolution would be to open the IRC chat to allow anyone with Mibbit or an IRC client to access the chat.
A more unorthodox suggestion would be to create the new RPG Live chat as a unique location on Second Life. Chat participants could create their avatar, then select from a custom assortment, transforming their online presence into an elf, orc, dragonborn, and more (dibs on flumphs). The RPG Live locale could feature a castle, a dungeon, and a sample town, all available for adventurers to explore.
The Tavern would of course be the location where participants could gather and chat. The dungeon would be a multi-level maze featuring sample encounters from D&D (the flooded lower levels are of course mine). The possibilities are endless.
WotC could turn a tidy profit, by selling custom skins for avatars, specialized items, and real estate in their online environment.
Now THAT would be fun!
