But they shared a closeness- a common bond - that always felt to the young Grisham like what he imagined a fatherly bond to be. And a boy raised without a father amongst the Forest People was always searching for that bond.</p><p>It was little surprise that Grisham followed in Plonius' footsteps and became a ranger.</p><p>For a time the pair ranged throughout the disputed territories between the Realms of Redwood, Byr and Awad, living the life of the wandering protector. They defended tiny settlements that barely warranted a name from savage gnolls, guarded travelers along lonely roads from opportunistic bandits, and guided folk lost in the wilderness back to the safety of civilization. And all the while, Plonius taught the undisciplined young Grisham the ways of the wild, the basics of fighting with two-weapons, tracking prey across the plains...</p><p>It was a good life, but there were lessons that Plonius couldn't teach Grisham - things that the young barbarian needed to see and do for himself. The Hound had spent considerable time in Battle City when he was a young man, training at the Cat's Claw Dueling Pride, and he spun many tales of his time amongst the city folk while the two men enjoyed a brace of coneys after a hard day on the trail. The stories of flashing blades, sultry women, and exotic magic struck a chord within young Grisham and the barbarian desired to spend some time sampling what lusty fruits civilization had to offer him.</p><p>The Hound understood and readily introduced him to Miromar, leader of the Cat's Paw. After displaying the basic skills that Plonius had taught him over the years, Grisham was admitted to the Dueling Pride and set along the path of a fighting style called 'High Sword, Low Axe'. For a time, life was good, and fighter training occupied all of the barbarian's time, but things had changed in Battle City since Plonius had lived there. As a city rife with adventurers of one sort of another, there was regular bloodshed in the streets as blades were drawn and spells hurled at the thinnest of reasons.</p><p>In such a climate of controlled anarchy, it was common for the students of Battle City's many fighting schools to hire out as bodyguards for important people or organizations. Such was the arrangement between the Cat's Claw Dueling Pride and a popular tavern known as Ye Old Salutation Inn. Students were given coin and ale in exchange for muscle and steel; it was only after many night-time assignments escorting 'couriers' that Grisham realized that the tavern was a front for one of the local thieves guilds.</p><p>Not that that realization changed anything for him. He never engaged in theft himself and was doing nothing dishonorable by protecting his employers from the hired swords of rival guilds. And they were many; both the Flashing Blades Academy and The Bloodmoon School had similar arrangements with hostile groups and the dark alleys of rat town rang nightly with the clashing of swords and the screams of dying men. </p><p>This went on for almost two full years before the wrong person was in the wrong place at the wrong time and the full wrath of Battle City's Council of Heroes was brought to bear against the clashing thieves guilds. In this case it was a visiting professor at the illustrious Redhurst Academy of Magic who was on his way back to the college after a late night liaison with a courtesan when he stumbled drunkenly into a conflict between the Flashing Blades and the Cat's Pride. He began to toss around some flashy evocations and was quickly run through by some blade or other. The headmaster at Redhurst was upset, the high cleric of the goddess of magic was upset, the King of Heroes himself was upset and soon every watchman in Battle City was cracking skulls all over rat town looking for the killer. Professional gladiators were hired to deal with any 'bad eggs' from the fighting schools who were too much for the watch alone to handle.</p><p>And suddenly, the lure of civilization in Battle City didn't seem so appealing to Grisham and he lost himself once more in the disputed territories. It didn't take him long to find Plonius' trail and it lead him after a time to Flavonshire where he was told that his mentor and friend was accused of murder using black magic.</p><p>Is it any wonder he punched that self-righteous blacksmith in the eye?</p></blockquote><p></p>
