I've always considered Tharizdun to be one of the iconic D&D ultimate bad guys. Not like Orcus, a more abstract mysterious almost a force of nature or chaos itself. The in game history and out of game history are both so fascinating to me.

The adventure itself I read at an age when mysteries like this were very profound for me. It made a long lasting impression and is one of the pillars that keeps my love of Greyhawk and D&D alive.

Tharizdun is definitely at his coolest in WG4. (Which is why I'm running it at the moment in 4E). His use in the Gord novels is great until he actually appears. Then he gets rather less great.

I rather think that Gygax was at his best when describing strange cults of chaos and their temples.

Cheers!

Yeah, its like a Lovecraft novel as in the fear of the entity is much better than the entity itself. Very few horror stories pull that off well (and that's what Tharizdun is - pure horror!)

In our campaign Tharizdun is world spanning though does have special ties to Greyhawk

That and Gygax's later "Gord the Rogue" novels were over the top and did to the setting what I think he'd liked to have done to the company at the time.
