Mortal Kombat was stupid...but it was also good fun. Watching Christoper Lambert mug his way through the production was almost worth it alone. There were plenty of good fight scenes, and a servicable plot to move the story along. The second movie.....[shudder]...now that was bad. Wow. (I'm somewhat reminded of a 3 Geeks story where they have a comics movie marathon, and somewhere in the middle they watch "Spewn". After the film ends, they stare at each other: "Well, I think we can all agree that Spewn was a pretty faithful adapation of the comic, right? But do any of us actually like the comic?") I haven't seen Event Horizon, although I hear it's a typical Haunted House movie. Not bad, just not really that good, either. Soldier looked interesting, but I understand it sputtered along. Again, not really that bad, but not really very good. As for Paul Anderson, he was also responsible for Resident Evil, one of the best adaptions of a video game to a movie frachies EVAR, IMHO. The RE movie was far better than it had a right to be. Considering how lean a category that is, I'll give him props. We're not talking 'Driving Miss Daisy' here, but compare it with, say, "House of the Dead". The moment that I heard they were planning on seriously doing an 'Aliens versus Predator' movie, I knew it was doomed to failure. The original miniseries back in 1986 was too well-written to translate into a movie franchise that's already been plagued with too many cooks. Too many franchise divisions have too much invested (mentally and financially) in the various franchises not to screw it up. I don't think any directory short of a hollywood powerhouse would have the pull to make the film his way. Cameron might be able to muscle the producers and studio execs to get his way...Paul Anderson can't, and was probably chosen partly because of that fact. Maybe I'll be suprised, but I'm thinking I won't be.
