A creature with 15 HP will survive the average fireball on a save, whereas a creature with 29 HP will survive the average fireball on a failed save. These are not high HP numbers for 5e. You can't ignore the impact of overkill at these totals.Assuming you have effective AoE available to the party, and assuming the creatures are in a formation that allows that AoE to be effective, it's still not a safe assumption that an AoE will kill them if they have 29 HP.</blockquote>
