The Kalevala, Finnish gods and stuff

Finnish monsters

MONSTERS
Haltia: fairy/gnome/brownie small, human-like, mysterious. Domestic ones called Kotihaltia. Also Metsanhaltia (forest spirits), Maan-haltiat (land spirits), Veden-haltiat (water spirits), and Ilman-haltiat (air spirits)

Kotihaltia: These are domesticated Haltia. Like English brownies, they are secretive but benevolent and love to help out, particularly on the farm. One looks after the barnyard, another cares for the mill, yet another supervises the farmhouse. You get the idea.

Don’t upset them. Pretend not to notice them. Accidentally leave food out as they expect to be fed.

Kul: half-fish water spirits. Live in mud in lakes and at bottom of wells, will poison unless you sing to them.

Piru: evil demon spirits, use riddles, do lempo’s dirty work

Surma: underworld jaws of death monster with sword-like fangs
