I'm going to be the DM for a small gaming group in the coming fall. It's been a long time since I played RPG so I'm relearning the rules. We will be playing 3.5-edition D&D. I'll be DM because I'm the only one with interest in doing it. The others are really into playing PCs.
I also wants an original campaign world. So I'm posting a bit of my ideas here. I would be really thankful for any ideas or responses. Or if you could link me to any relevant threads of old. I've been looking and searching around. This places is a dungeon filled with gemstones.
The Kingdom of Argantrim lies in a rift in the crust of the world. It streches several miles northwest-southeast. Cities, villages and trading outposts are spread along the sides of the deep rift (on both sides) and deep down. It's a dark world where very few of the people of Argantrim sees the sun. Most of those who have seen the sky have seen it from far below, from a clifftop streching out over the crevasse.
It's unknown how the catastrophe happened to Rift. Some says it's always been this way, others that there was an earthquake. The barbarians tells legend of the celestial object Lune (the Moon) which once fell down on the world and shattered the crust. To the north, in the tall mountains (where there is an ancient Dwarven Kingdom) people speak of a war between the mortals and the gods and how the gods used the heaven itself as a weapon.
There's a king of Argantrim. But he's simply The King. No one has seen him. Few even sees the Royal Family. The capital is built on a large plateu in the middle of the rift, with powerful, ancient stone bridges connecting the plateu to either side of the crevasse. Around the capital there are stones resting in the very air, though unnatural means. Magic is not trusted in many parts of the kingdom, though there are many colleges in the capital, and wizards and sorcerors are often seen around.
There are two large outposts settlement on the surface. Mostly used by military and slaves, and it's strictly forbidden to enter the surface world without permission. Which is almost impossible to get. The slaves are from enemy kingdoms below, Duergar, and from the barbarian tribes that roames the enormeous plains around the rift. These tribes are composed of humans, orcs and gnolls. The Kingdom of Argantrim has allied themselves with some of the strongest tribes, making the members of other tribes their slaves.
There are no Elves in the kingdom. They are like a mythical race. There are a very low number of Half-Elves though the Elven blood in them are thin. There are Drows but I'm thinking about a few House-Rules for them to make them more split from the Elven race.
I will give my players the possiblity of giving their Humans Darkvision or Low-Light Vision due to many having lived their whole life in the Rift.
Apart from Humans the most populated races are deep dwarves, deep halflings, deep gnomes/svirfneblin, rock gnomes, drow and tiefling. There are also a low number of minotaurs and gargoyles.
Apart from the rival kingdom of Formians, there is also the upcoming threat of a Formian kingdom. So in this world, the Formians will not be Outsiders. The dungeons connecting towns, villages and outposts are filled with horrible beasts and sinister creatures. Bands of troglodytes are a problem in many parts of the kingdom. Further below there is a Mind Flayer-empire, and even further down: Rumours of Dragons.
I'm going to read up on Underdark-material, but anyone get any tips on people living their whole life in huge cavers and long-streching dungeons?
