A lot of it is written as history more than literature. In order to make movies and TV shows, there is going to be a lot of changes. Events will need to be condensed, characters fleshed out, sensibilities crafted for the modern audience, etc. Just look at Gandalf. He feels right in the movies, but he's actually quite different. In the books, he's arrogant and makes a lot of mistakes, mistakes the script writers foisted on to other characters! Al we can really ask is that we feel we are transported to Middle Earth, and that there are engaging characters and epic tales that fit loosely into canon.
