First: http://www.pvponline.com/archive.php3?archive=20030918 Now, let's work in order: 1) I hadn't taken a look at the Item Familiar feat before. Thanks for pointing it out. Unhappily, it's not quite suited to this case, since the feat seems primarily intended for weapons/held objects. Moreover, it seems to be more of a way to "grow" intelligent objects. I think a better solution might be to pare some abilities down instead. To put matters in perspective, the wizard in question is currently 10th level, has a familiar already, doesn't have the Improved Familiar feat, and has no idea the item can even *be* bonded. 2) You made a number of mechanical errors in your feat. It should be [General], not [Metamagic], since it isn't affecting spells. Also, since *I'm* the GM, it'd be singularly useless for me to possess it. Now, let's actually try to offer some constructive criticism, hmm? I gather you regard the *familiar* abilities as over the top; I have no idea of your opinion on its abilities as a magic item. So let's compare the potential familiars - the earliest the wizard could bond this item is level 12, and he'd have to dismiss his familiar to do it. Of course, then he has to wait a game-year, and he's not going to have anything like that kind of down time. I fully expect that he won't have a chance to gain it until level 15 or 18. Now, the highest the Improved Familiar table goes is 7th level, at which point he gains a pseudo-dragon. The Drake's Hold has better speed, lower AC, much higher hitpoints, hardness, no skills, no feats, much more limited senses (or it should - I missed that), counts as an object, better attacks, breath weapons instead of poison (I forgot the DCs too), and two abilities a normal familiar doesn't normally receive. I fully admit that the Drake's Hold is significantly better than a pseudo-dragon. However, it's going to come into play *much* later, so it can be as well. Still, I think you've got a certain point. The combat abilities need to be toned down significantly. Anyone else?
