Virtually any other monster that is scary is scary because in some fashion its like a Spectre.  The exceptions tend to be monsters that provoke individual phobias.  In fact, the monster is so hideous that I don't generally place them when I'm the DM.  They are just too brutal.Monsters, other than humans, responcible for the most deaths in my gaming:1) Green slime - The #1 killer of inexperienced players.2) Stirge - Very strong basis for a monster both mechanically and in its fear provoking appearance.  Start dropping templates on them and they get even nastier.  Worse yet, even nastier under my house rules because they can make use of the clinch special manuever to become very difficult to deal with while feeding.3) Shadow - I've seen this monster disorganize and terrorize more parties than any other.  It's the weak version of the Spectre, and if you don't have a cleric in the party, you'll probably die.4) Vampire - A demi-spectre, that trades incorporality for a host of other powers and disadvantages and generally comes out HD for HD weaker on the exchange.  Also, less alien and implacable, which can be good and bad from the DM's perspective.  Still nasty, especially if a spellcaster.5) Gargoyles - This is more due to the fact that I love gargoyles than the monster itself, but very nasty brute with high average damage for its size and HD and its ability to hide lets it obtain close range and surprise easily. I don't play as often as a DM, but monsters that I've killed my own PC's1) Orc2) Blue Dragon3) Vampire4) Mindflayer5) PechI don't think I've been killed by the same thing twice.</blockquote>
