When attempting to steal the chest I told them that the chest was too heavy and they kept trying to drag it off anyway. They could have grabbed a handful of loot, they could have run off and hidden, I gave them more than one way to survive. They chose not to.</p><p></p><p>If a player knowingly pushes the boundaries of safety past the breaking point I'm not going to save their character. But I'm still kind of sad when as a DM I have to cut a character story arc short because of the consequences of their actions.</p></blockquote><p></p>
