I once made a character based on myself so that I didn't have to roleplay. It was created at around 2am at a very late convention game and everyone needed brand new characters for the intro mod (this was living greyhawk). I didn't feel like coming up with a brand new character concept so I made Cedric the bard, based on me, Cedric the player (some liberties were taken with stat distribution). I came up with the back story that he fell through a portal from earth and crawled out of Zagyg's old outhouse in Greyhawk city. He's forgotten some of his background, but he knows it was a magical world where strange constructs called automobiles carried people around and devices called ipods and computers held information and offered entertainment. He's trying to get back, but in the mean time is content to wander the game world. He also tends to know out of character information (i.e. Bardic Knowledge) as if he's read them somewhere in a book or game... Whenever I didn't feel like exerting the effort to roleplay a character, I pulled him out. I just made all in-game decisions according to what I, the player, would have done. The ironic thing is that one time, I got recognition for having the best roleplaying at an event by playing him :P
