Our groups "optimized" barbarian was a literal meat grinder and all rejoiced - until the day he was Confused and slaughtered the cleric with a crit. Conversely, our party mage was "all that" until he failed a simple Fort save after wandering around in a filth covered cavern and nearly died.  Stuff happens, characters have weaknesses regardless their optimization attempts. It's why you adventure in groups in DnD (and don't just sulk around angst ridden in a crypt all day talking about all the blood you're gonna suck and all the people you might kill if you get the chance...) Perhaps this player needs to be reminded of that?
