The One Ring

So I have been geeking out about an RPG I only just found out about, and while I don't have time for the distraction among my host of other distractions, it's something I'd like answers about.

So!

Has anyone gotten this book? It's sold out on Amazon, and from the previews and even the character builder online, I'm not sure how to actually play this game.

What's the resolution system?

How does combat work?

Levelling up?

What's with all the stats?

Why can't I play a wizard or elrond elf?

Since when do non-Gandalf characters cast spells? I don't remember that, save for some mention of the dwarves during their crafting (certainly not the traditional spellcasting of D&D, with large effects)

It's different from d20, and I believe it's a d6 game that has bonuses off tat die. I believe damage works with solid numbers rather than random die rolls (damage 5 on a sword, with Health or Body 6 seems telling).

I'm not sure about the heart and will ratings, nor how it all works in play: seems illustrative and dramatic, but not practical for game play. I could be wrong, butI can't verify it by looking at the book because I can't get a copy!

Any help would be appreciated.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't all wizards in Middle-Earth mayar? I mean, there would be some balance issues, I would think...

from the west, yeah I think so.

But by that reasoning, elves should be fairly powerful also.

I just want to know how they adjudicate magic in-game. Are they traits a character has, is Gandalf so high level there isn't a chance of failure for him?

There are tons of threads on RPG.net about the game. The races don't get spellcasting so much as they get racially appropriate supernatural abilities.

And the character choices are restricted by boxed set. This one is about playing the humans, dwarfs and hobbits of the immediately post-"The Hobbit" period. Other choices may be available in subsequent sets.

The One Ring is meant to be hyper-focused on a given moment and setting and not an all-encompassing Middle Earth game, at least not yet.

Yeah, I was hoping to start such threads here (cause we love ENworld, amirite?)

Thing is, I'm hoping there are rules for adjudicating even a somewhat roughshot Gandalf in-game as an NPC WITHOUT reverting to GM fiat.

Ditto other characters who could fit the bill (radagast) or as villains (the Necromancer and/or apprentices). Gandalf seems to do more 'magical" stuff in the Hobbit than he does regularly in LOTR, including lighting his staff and disappearing, or making his pipe smokerings turn green in color. How to judge this stuff? I could whip something up, I suppose, based on the regular rules for magic characters are using, but still.

Granted, there's something on the Circuit7 website about trolls and giant design in the game, and orcs I think, so such games likely need to focus on basic Hobbit characters without wizards. So at least there's some magic.

Are there rules for Dragons?

The One Ring looks great! I still need to run a one-shot with it to see how it plays, but upon my cursory read the feel of it definitely seems to ring true of Middle-Earth.

There is a thread going here that might answer several of your questions:

Give that thread a read and then ask any questions left unanswered from there. There are several of us here that can help answer your questions.
