The slaadi always seemed to get short shrift in earlier editions; demons and devils sucked most of the oxygen out of the Outer Planes, leaving slaadi, modrons, and angels to fight over what was left.I think a big part of the problem was that they were supposed to be the exemplars of Chaotic Neutral. Since the law/chaos axis was very poorly defined, especially in the absence of a good/evil component, it was hard for writers to figure out just what that meant. How can you have such a thing as a "slaad lord" without compromising their chaotic-ness? For that matter, how can you say anything consistent about slaadi or their behavior? What does an exemplar of Chaotic Neutral do besides sit around being Chaotic Neutral?Now that outsiders are no longer required to exemplify their alignments and Chaotic Neutral has gone the way of THAC0, the designers have a lot more freedom to flesh out the slaad race. And with the shiny new black slaad mini (it's so beautiful, in that horrible-face-eating-monster kind of way), I look forward to introducing my PCs to a bunch of crazy extraplanar toads.</blockquote>
