Technically, all books after Tolkien are rip-offs of his work. If you really think about it, he created the fantasy genre, and as such, anything after his work is "a rip off". 2, I quote Dennis McKiernan (Authors note in Silver Wolf, Black Falcon) "...in my earlier works, such as the Iron Tower Trilogy and The Silver Call Duology, there are elements very much akin to Tolkien. As I felt inspired by his work, I wanted these books to be a tribute to his work..." So just keep that in mind.
Good reads I have to agree with many of these posts: David Eddings' Belgariad is very good, as is Belgarath the Sorcerer and Polgara the Sorceress (both i would suggest reading AFTER you've read the Belgariad). I also liked his Mallorean series and his Sparhawk series (although I cannot for the life of me think of what the whole series is called right now...) Another good read is the Shannara series by Terry Brooks. Start with Sword of Shannara and if you like that, then read the rest of them. Highly recommended!!! Dennis L McKiernan is also VERY VERY good. Now, I know I had posted before and some people said that he's a "rip off of Tolkien" but I would simply like to point out a few facts before you make a rash decision NOT to read him. 1. In any case, if you liked Tolkien, you will certainly like McKiernan Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's War of the Lance Chronicles (Dragons of Winter Night, Dragons of SPring Dawning etc) are very good...especially if you want a D&D-styled book. Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time is good if you don't mind the slow pace. It's very realistic; very parallel to certain aspects of our world (ex. Artur PaenDrag vs Arthur Pendragon "King Arthur"). But the only complaint I had was that it's SOOO LONG and its still not done yet. 9 books and the story isn't finished. :D
